Hampton is a great place to find a beach or waterfront home, not only because of its proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean, but also because more than half of the city's 136 square miles is made up of water.
The city is part of the Hampton Roads area, a gorgeous stretch of oceanfront communities on the southeastern end of the Virginia Peninsula.

Shopping and Dining
Homeowners in Hampton not only have convenient access to the city’s own eclectic shops and boutiques, but they also are only a short, scenic drive away from all of the gift shops, malls and department stores in Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Portsmouth and the other communities along the Hampton Roads chain.
The residents of those cities, however, are probably flocking to Hampton these days because of the colossal Peninsula Town Center, which opened its doors to the public in May 2010. This shiny new mixed-use, open-air development is 991,000-square feet of retail stores, eateries, residential space and commercial offices.
There are so many restaurants along the Hampton Roads chain that even the most persnickety eater in your family will have no trouble finding something that suits his or her taste. Many of Hampton’s unique local restaurants take advantage of the nearby Atlantic Ocean’s tremendous bounty and serve up some of the freshest seafood imaginable, including delicacies native to the area, like Chesapeake Bay crab cakes and Lynnhaven River oysters.
Parks and Recreation
Hampton’s year round mild weather enables you to enjoy a range of outdoor activities, such as the Buckroe Fishing Pier, the miles of neighborhood trails and The Hamptons and Woodlands golf courses.
The City of Hampton’s Parks and Recreation Department offers a comprehensive selection of sports and recreation programs for all ages and physical capabilities. Homeowners can also enjoy unique special events like Storytelling in the Park, Groovin’ by the Bay and the free Family Movie Series at Bluebird Gap Farm.
Living
Hampton real estate offers a great mix of historic locations and new communities. While waterfront homes are plentiful, Hampton also has more than its fair share of single-family homes, condos, townhouses, co-ops, apartments, golf course homes, lofts, farms/ranches, multi-family homes and vacant land.
The Hampton Roads area is home to several military bases, including Langley Air Force Base in Hampton; Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach; and Fort Eustis, the Army Transportation Corps headquartered in Newport News.
The Hampton area offers job opportunities in fishing, retail, public administration, education, manufacturing and technology.
Schools, Health, Transportation
Hampton can lay claim to the oldest public school in the United States. Hampton High School is a descendant of the Syms-Eaton Academy established in 1634 as America's first free public school. Additionally, Hampton City Public Schools comprise more than 35 elementary and middle schools, and four high schools. There are several private schools from which to choose as well.
Healthcare and medical services options in the Hampton city area include the Columbia Peninsula Behavioral Center, Sentara Hampton General Hospital and Newport News General Hospital.
The Hamptons Roads area is linked together by a labyrinth of interconnected roads, highways and freeways. Transportation options for Hampton homeowners also include intercity bus service, Amtrak train service and the Hampton Roads Transit system, offering transit service within Hampton’s city limits and regional bus service along the Hampton Roads corridor.
