As a homeowner, you will no doubt realize that energy bills are going to be the bane of your existence. Human beings have managed to perfect the art of living in harsh climates, but in order to do so, they require the consumption of massive amounts of energy in heating and cooling. Technology has come to our Rescue by enabling us to make our homes warmer or cooler without expending as much energy as it would normally require to do so.

Energy saving is a major theme of many home improvements over the last decade and with good reason.

Energy saving improvements don't only help your comfort, they also help your pocket by providing massive savings and the environment by lowering your carbon footprint. How's that for a sweet deal? All homeowners should be aware of the importance of energy saving in a household, and to that end, here are some tips that will help you save the environment and your heard earned cash.

1) Fridges

Many refrigerators come with energy saving options, meaning that they are already optimized for saving energy. However, there are ways to further increase the energy saving ability of these appliances. Instead of setting a fridge on the coldest setting, consider setting it on a warmer setting. This usually means that the refrigerator burns less electricity, and to be quite honest, most things you store in a refrigerator won't be affected to any great degree. Balancing the energy you need to keep stuff cool with the amount of energy you require to do so is important in maintaining an energy budget.

2) Washing Machines

Most washing machines come with a built in hot-water setting that can be either electric or gas. Instead of using this setting, keeping the incoming water at average or cold temperature saves a lot of energy in the long run. It's great news for energy saving and better news for the environment as studies have shown that changing the setting can save as much as five hundred pounds of carbon dioxide waste a year for an electric heating element and as much as one hundred and fifty pounds for a gas heater.

3) Buy Power Saving Light Bulbs

Incandescent bulbs have been a mainstay of the homeowner's vital supplies for decades.

Recently, however, fluorescent bulbs that fit into home sockets have become available and the benefits in terms of energy saving is immense. These bulbs have been termed energy saving bulbs because they consume as little as twelve percent of the original wattage of an incandescent bulb and produce the same amount of light. They waste much less energy in terms of heat as well, and can last as much as four times longer than the average incandescent bulb.

For a homeowner, energy saving is a must, especially in an economy like the one we have today. Bills, especially energy bills and heating bills, can take a huge chunk out of your income, not to mention maintenance repairs that result from energy wastage. Thinking about the options available to you, energy saving appliances can bea small step in the right direction.

Utilizing these devices properly can compound on the savings you get, multiplying their value to your home in the long run.
